Development status of medical titanium alloy for fracture fixation

Date:2022-03-30 14:36:28       Number of views:

Pure titanium was first used in orthopedics as internal fixation plate and screw in 1965. It has high corrosion resistance, good biocompatibility and high safety, and will not cause adverse tissue reactions. The elastic modulus of titanium plate is low (68 GPA), which can significantly reduce the stress shielding effect in the process of fracture healing. It is an ideal material for making bone plates and screws. However, the poor ductility of titanium leads to processing difficulties, and the tensile strength of titanium plate is also greatly limited.

At present, titanium alloys with mature research and widely used in clinic include Ti6Al4V, Ti6Al7Nb, ti13nb13zr, ti15zr4nb4ta2pd, ti29nb13ta46zr, etc., which have obtained satisfactory experimental results and reliable clinical evidence. The elastic modulus of titanium 2448 alloy developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been proved to be effective in promoting fracture healing. It is only in the experiment of titanium 2448 alloy developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. High strength and low elastic modulus make titanium alloy more suitable for fracture fixation, but the ductility and fatigue resistance of titanium alloy are poor and lack of bone tissue induction, which limits the application of titanium alloy.
